Stearns County Sheriff's Office

The Stearns County Sheriff’s Office Patrol Division is the most visible and high-profile division within the Office. The patrol officers are the uniformed deputies driving marked squad cars and responding to calls for service within the county.

The patrol officers are assigned to shifts on a yearly basis. The Office utilizes the following four shifts: day shift (7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.); day power (11:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.); evening shift (4:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m.); and midnight shift (9:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m.) Officers are also assigned areas or quadrants of the county during their shifts. This is done to minimize officer response time and maximize the protection provided to the citizens of Stearns County. Stearns County Patrol Deputies are responsible for answering calls for service, aiding other agencies, warrant arrests, serving civil process papers, and performing numerous public speaking engagements throughout the county.

The Patrol Division is currently comprised of 68 full-time officers and 4 canines. Of these 68 officers, 1 holds the rank of Captain, 3 hold the rank of Lieutenant (two assigned to patrol and 1 assigned to investigations) and 10 hold the rank of sergeant (7 assigned to patrol, 1 assigned to investigations, 1 assigned to the Violent Offender Task Force – VOTF, and 1 assigned to the Office of Professional Standards and Training.). The entire patrol division is under the direction of the patrol captain and the 8 sergeants supervise various patrol shifts. From the patrol staff, 4 officers are assigned investigations, 2 officers are assigned to the civil process position, 2 officers and 1 sergeant have additional duties in recreational safety, handling water patrol and snowmobile patrol duties. 2 officers are assigned to the Violent Offender Task Force under the direction of the sergeant and 1 officer is assigned to the Human Trafficking Task Force. 1 sergeant is also assigned to the Office of Professional Standards and Training.

Also included in the patrol division are the Stearns County Campus Security Officers. There are 10 security officers covering the Stearns County Administration Center, Stearns County Courthouse, Stearns County Courts Facility Building, and the Probation Reporting Center/License Center West. These 10 campus security deputies are fully deputized and licensed by the State of Minnesota. They provide armed security for court trials and handle numerous calls for assistance by the other Stearns County Service Agencies.

Officers from the Patrol Division provide the personnel for specialized functions of the Sheriff’s Office These include the underwater dive and rescue team, specialized emergency response team, crime prevention, neighborhood watch, 4 canine units (1 Bloodhound for tracking, 2 for narcotics detection, and 1 multipurpose), seasonal weight restriction enforcement, UAV (drone) flight team, and side scan sonar team.

The Sheriff’s Office contracts with four cities in the county to provide additional law enforcement services. The four cities are St. Augusta, Rockville, St. Stephen, and Holdingford. The Sheriff’s Office also contracts with Fairhaven Township for additional services. Although the Sheriff’s Office is responsible to provide law enforcement to these cities and township, they have elected to have officers assigned to their city at specific times for additional patrolling and protection. The city or township then pays the county for each hour an officer is specifically assigned to that city. Officials work closely with the Sheriff’s Office to coordinate the schedule and coverage for any special events taking place.

The Sheriff’s Office is committed to continuing contract services as more townships and cities express the need for these services.
